When working in this way, you'll have two structure applications, one for authoring which uses a very simple layout, and one for publishing which applies the page-based formatting that you want in a printed book. In addition to the powerful formatting functions by using XSL-FO available with the V4.3, AH Formatter V6.0 has added the ability for formatting HTML and XML with CSS. In effect, if you make your source files readable, you wreck the look of the PDF files produced by FameMaker. Just discoverd Perhaps XML+XSL - most browsers support XSL I think. @allquixotic: look at the (awfull, I know) picture. If you want to transform XML from one format to another, and especially if either the input or output XML is complicated or the transformation itself is difficult or awkward to express, then XSL may be a good choice. AH Formatter V6.0 Output formats currently supported include PDF, PS, PCL, AFP, XML (area tree representation), Print, AWT and PNG, and to a lesser extent, RTF and TXT. I want multipe pages printed to yeah, I thought about that too: Setting page-height in xsl:fo to a high number and printing it to a A4 PDF with "lpr -pPDF -o fit-to-page table.pdf" works good - remaining problem is, that I don't know which height to set - see my answer to @RedGrittyBrick's answer – stwagner Aug 10 '12 at 14:27. The icing on the People are always making little changes. I propose that AFP is already a much better archive and portable document format than PDF/A. It is much better in handling and referencing print resources for example. Yes, there are other options for creating a PDF from XML other than XSL-FO, but they all require considerable amount of knowledge and coding and/or a considerable amount of money. Today we do support the import and use of XML formatted elements today (CSS, XSL, and can output XSL-FO) but we would not claim that to be a standard software function.
